  • Just so you know, the larger gauge wires were to carry more current required by the old halogen bulb and are unnecessarily large for an LED light. A better comparison of how shit is crap these days is that a lot of electronics don’t even use copper wire but instead copper clad aluminum that’s subject to corroding withing 5-10 years of use. But I love to see you repairing things and “upgrading” along the way with thicker gauge wire! Just wanted to point out the larger power consumption of older appliances is often why they have larger gauge wires. There is nothing better for the environment than fixing and reusing what we have rather than replacing !



  • If you put the same tires on a 3k lb car as a 4k lb car and drive exactly the same, the 4k lb car will wear them quicker. Trust I’m no stranger to high power cars burning tires up, that’s not what I’m talking about lol. And it was just one example. If you have 2 cars with same kwh batteries, but one is lighter, which is going further? This is basic physics to the point of bordering on common sense. I absolutely love the torque of EV cars and I can see how it would be hard to stay off the skinny pedal on a merge lol. The aptera looks freaking awesome and is imo sort of the next evolution of things. Simply, the lighter you make a transportation device, the less energy it takes to move. Humans are a pretty insignificant part of the weight of a car, the vehicle is mainly trying to move itself and with or without a driver in it would have quite similar range. The easier you make it to move the vehicle, the faster and further they will go. I think that this threads conflating my critique of battery weight for saying EVs are bad, which I’m not. I’m simply saying the energy density of batteries per lb is pretty far away from fuel right now, and as that gap closes with newer battery tech the argument for ICE cars gets increasingly more feeble. I personally am waiting for batteries to get LIGHT and CHEAP enough to make 200 mile range motorcycles an affordable and viable option for me! We are damned close and I think the future of electric transport is going to be awesome. I’d love to have a small array of pannels on my roof to charge an EV and never have to worry about spending a buck on range, and simplify my maintinence to making sure the tires have tread and none of the suspension components are falling off from getting after it on the dirt roads here LOL. My gas car doesn’t ask for too many parts but of the repairs it has needed in the last 2 years, maybe 1/3rd of the components even exist on an EV.




  • It does wonders to increase ur inertia so u can’t stop as well in snow too, and makes it harder to change direction. I live in a snowy mountain range and my 2900 lb shit box runs circles around the Tesla’s and big trucks and suvs around here lol. Weight is the enemy of range, speed, efficiency, and gobbles up tires. I’m not saying the weight is an end all be all to things, but it is imo one of the major hurdles left to make EVs so much more competitive than they are. I mean shit a mid 90s geo metro is about as efficient as a brand new Prius. Why? Weight. Once evs can be produced in the 3k lb range they won’t need as much battery for a 300 mile range, or the heavy EVs will have some fucking crazy 800 mile range. THAT is what will knock ice out of the park and get them all replaced. The next big leap in battery tech will about kill gass cars, and only ice left on the road will likely be diesel 18 wheelers. But what do I know? I just work on these things every day.



  • Not necessarily true, things like direct injection, VVT and VVL and variable compression engines and variable vane turbos and 8 + speed transmissions have increased the efficiency of gas cars. The gas engines are still wasting a lot as heat, if you have any interest in that u should look into smokey yunick and his hot vapor engines. There are improvements to be made in ice but it will still never be 100% efficient. We have far from mastered internal combustion, and I suspect we never will as hopefully EV eventually replace most combustion vehicles.





  • It’s ok if u can’t relate, different people and places have different needs. Where I live there are areas where if you don’t fill your tank, you won’t make it to the next fuel stop. And no, the trees don’t have charging cables hanging off them. If you can do it that’s awesome, but they don’t work for people in rural cold climates quite yet! I’d love to have an “EV” hybrid thing with a smaller battery and a diesel on board generator, zero range anxiety and bonus points if the generator is an old mechanical diesel that can run veggie oil or used oil from my other shit boxes or various biofuels. Sure it won’t be as clean as a true EV but I bet it would be more efficient than a gas car.


  • Yea I’m all for simplicity. But honestly a modern EV is probably LESS complex than a modern ice. They all have the same complexities with stupid computers for every component (body control modules, “infotainment” crap, hell vw likes to have a module in each door and each seat to controll door locks windows etc) but Ice also had complications of an engine. I love gas engines I’m a gear head, but let me be the first to tell u that there’s a LOT less going on in an electric drivetrain than a gasser. Sure the control modules for evs are computers in of themselves, but a modern auto drivetrain has a computer for the engine and a sperate computer for / in the transmission, plus they both have computers for abs/tc and interior crap and cameras etc. My hurdle to adopting electric is their so goddamned expensive that they can’t outweigh oil, gas, and service costs yet. (If you disagree about that, that’s another conversation. I drive sub 3k$ cars when I have to but mainly ride motorcycles and do my own work so no there isn’t a way to get around cheaper in an EV than an ice for me yet)


  • My last 4 jobs have been in person interview. Never had luck with online aplications, hell my current job I’ve been at 2 years now wasn’t even hiring. I was moving to the area and thought it looked like a great place and reached out and we managed to make something happen. Industry dependent however it can be very hard to do that, nature of my business is mainly independently owned shops so it’s easy to get ahold of the boss and make a conversation happen, that isn’t the case everywhere.



  • As a car and motorcycle enthusiast I can’t imagine never wanting to drive again, but then most people driving aren’t their just steering wheel holders using the 30 minute commute to get in their daily reels. Self driving cars are honestly probably better than half those morons that can’t be bothered to looks where they fling their 2 ton steel cage, but if they nail me on my motorcycle they have to pay. If a self driving appliance on wheels slams into me a PR firm will make sure they don’t pay dime to me. Until the people that sign off on this tech are directly responsible for everything their tech does then they should not be in the road point blank. Doesn’t matter how good or bad self driving cars are, with no responsibility to their actions they have no place roaming around the public where they can cause injury and property damage to others.
