It can be boiled down to: avoid anything big corpos are pushing
Ew, this article is an ad for another company. I feel icky when people try to monetize my basic human rights.
Here’s a not for profit article alternative: https://oit.utk.edu/security/learning-library/article-archive/privacy-onboard-ai-google-gemini/
easy, install graphene instead
It says to turn it off you open the Gemini app on your Android phone and change some settings. I uninstalled the Gemini app completely. I wonder if it’s still running on my account somehow.
You can manage it from https://myactivity.google.com/product/gemini
My phone won’t let me uninstall it. And it shows it’s off yet every now and then it rears it’s ugly head.
- Install adb on your PC
- Enable developer options on your phone
- Enable USB Debugging inside the developer options
- Connect the phone to the PC using USB
- Open a console window of your choice
- Execute
adb devices
and allow USB debugging for this PC on your phone - Execute
adb shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.google.android.apps.gemini
- Done
You can do that with any app you like, they can all be disabled that way. Beware though: if you disable critical system components (like e.g. your last launcher, keyboard or systemui) you might not have a great time using your phone afterwards.
Alternatively:
- Install GrapheneOS
- Never concern yourself with invasive software again
I’ve never even seen Gemini on my phone.
None of my work apps nor my banks app are compatible with Graphene. We need legislation at this point.
I don’t believe you
graphene cant be installed on just any device. the list is quite small actually.
I’m aware, thank you.
So are we just casually mentioning Graphene in every Android article like Linux is mentioned in every Windows article? How many new phones actually support Graphene?
To be fair, the article itself recommends it.
Fair enough. Unfortunately, that only covers around 5% of Android users in the US.
The circlejerk around Graphene is insane, it wouldn’t be as bad if it wasn’t literally only supported by Pixel phones that have 2% marketshare
it would be great to have a non-ml degoogle comm. but then i’m also not willing to put in the work to moderate right now so maybe i’m a whiny asshole
If nobody whines, people think we are ok with how things are, whining is good, even if we can’t do something about it
Use Canta & Shizuku You can uninstall pretty much everything
