Palmer Lucky turning into a Bond villain wasn’t exactly something I expected when I first saw him pushing the original Kickstarter Oculus

I completely agree that everyone is being recorded almost all the time in public, but your post reminded me of the last time I signed up for insurance. They gave me a device and said just keep it in my trunk for a slight discount. I knew it was obviously a gps tracker and told the sales lady they would have to pay me like minimum $100 a month to drive around with that thing. People give away their personal driving info for a couple of cents off on their insurance.

Honestly though digital compression now is so good it probably sounds the same.

Technology@lemmy.world•China solves 'century-old problem' with new analog chip that is 1,000 times faster than high-end Nvidia GPUsEnglish
17·4 months agoThat’s a good point. The model weights could be voltage levels instead of digital representations. Lots of audio tech uses analog for better fidelity.I also read that there’s a startup using particle beams for lithography. Exciting times.
Nice revision. If you’re including TOR I would say Tailscale could be considered for a VPN. I’m hosting a Gitea instance completely for free on their service. It’s on my hardware, but it’s their domain.

14·6 months agoI self hosted my own email server for a while. I don’t know how other domain resellers work but namecheap has hardly any info on the whois query. The reason I gave up self hosting email was because all my emails kept going to spam for everyone I emailed. I think there’s a way to advertise your server to mark it as not spam for Gmail, but I don’t remember exactly. Plus incoming email needs spam protection.

Technology@lemmy.world•Pentagon Warns Microsoft: Company’s Use of China-Based Engineers Was a “Breach of Trust”English
4·6 months agoTotally agree, but at this point Microsoft is so ingrained in the US federal government that it’s practically a branch of it.

Technology@lemmy.world•Mastodon says it doesn't 'have the means' to comply with age verification lawsEnglish
1741·6 months agoThat sounds like a very functional and rational solution to the problem of age verification. But age verification isn’t the ultimate goal, it’s mass surveillance, which your solution doesn’t work for.

37·7 months agoDamn that hits the nail on the head. Especially that analogy of watching a robot lift weights on your behalf then claiming gains. It’s causing brain atrophy.

Technology@lemmy.world•Study finds AI tools made open source software developers 19 percent slowerEnglish
3·8 months agoI’m not really sure why it was such a small sample size. It definitely casts doubt on some of their conclusions. I also have issues with some methodology used. I think a better study that came out a week or two ago was the one that showed visible neurological decline from AI use.

Technology@lemmy.world•Are a few people ruining the internet for the rest of us?English
1·8 months agoI think you’ve got a point. My initial thought was that because this platform is decentralized and there’s no Elon or Zuck at the helm, this isn’t applicable. But as you pointed out, the vast majority of users don’t interact or post anything, so that naturally amplifies the users who do, particularly if they have an agenda to push.

50·1 year agoAmazon, Meta, Uber, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Coinbase, Toyota, Ford, GM, AT&T, Black & Decker, and Charter Communications are also making donations to Trump’s inauguration fund.
I guess I never really paid attention before but is it normal for companies to donate to an inauguration fund? It sure seems like a government sanctioned protection racket.

Technology@lemmy.world•Open source router firmware project OpenWrt ships its own entirely repairable hardwareEnglish
0·1 year agoJust pulled the trigger, only had European plugs in stock. I’ve got adapters so np. I’m getting it to replace my Raspberry Pi router that I’ve been using for a few years.
*Edit, I should say I’m a huge fan openWRT despite the fact that 15 years ago I managed to brick my linksys router so bad it actually caused sparks to shoot out the ethernet jacks. I flashed the wrong model firmware.

Iran has this capability and many people are worried they might do this. However, the fact that the information is coming from the current White House administration should be viewed with extreme scepticism. They have done nothing but lie to our faces since this war started.
