Even if it were true, that would be no reason not to get started. Every bit of reduced dependency is good.
The feature parity and global distribution isn’t there though. Sure you can make it work, but it’s going to be a chunk of extra engineering on top of the switch.

That said, I could see those trying to do multi cloud picking a European secondary.
Switching is how you get feature parity. Why would anyone contributing to FOSS be all “Oh I think I’ll develop this one feature that no one but a few specific big banks want.”
Just deal with it for now, and then put whatever money you previously put towards these expensive closed down services to developing what you need in the FOSS space. It’s not complicated.
