Hows the cheap people’s activation problem? lol
This is like asking “where is White Culture?”
My sibling in Christ, its called the Mainstream.
Or “Why isn’t there a straight community? Are the gays winning?”
“But when is white history month??”
I’ve been using both for about 20 years. I can honestly say most people can and should use both.
I just wiped a trash celeron pc that ran windows awful. I put Ubuntu 24 LTS on it and it screams. Took about an hour.
If you have old hardware that you want to extend the life of or repurpose, consider Linux before buying something new.
I don’t understand. Why should people run windows?
because they want to see ads in their start menu, send their pictures to some MS servers and have their notepad.exe crawl and crash because of AI.
you know, all the fun stuf…
Also if they want malware infections through notepad.exe - I can probably accomplish that on Linux with Wine, but it would take more effort.
Edit: I might give up and just send the Malware author a few bucks, out of pity.
Or I want the hardware/software I paid for to work
There’s a variety of reasons. I run Windows because my hardware doesn’t work on any Linux I tried. I don’t like it, but I don’t really have a choice
It’s like, there is a vegan community, but there isn’t a meat eaters community. We don’t need to spend a lot of time boring people telling them we use Windows, and how good Windows is.
Yet, you just felt the need to put ‘Windows’ and ‘good’ in the same sentence. Interesting 🤔
Sorry, threw out some bait and wanted to see what I caught 😉 🎣
No one has ever gone out of their way to run windows. At least not in 25y.
Idk how many people I have met who don’t know what windows is despite using it for years. For them it is Mac and PC (pc meaning windows), anything outside of that is black magic or hacker stuff.
Goddamnit, I installed librewolf on my office pc and changed the theme of slopOS-11 “oh he’s a hacker!”.
Why is a MacOS related screenshot posted in a Linux community for a question about Windows?
It’s like the mr worldwide meme
Clearly this is Commodore
And what’s with all the upvotes?
Probably because of “Linux is winning”. ;-)

MacOS is UNIX, Linux is UNIX, if I’m not mistaken.
Linux is software, windows is software, War Thunder is software so this comment is sponsored by war thunder
No, Linux is not UNIX. It is UNIX like. MacOS is UNIX, based on a BSD system.
BSD isn’t Unix. It’s fairest to say it is a Unix. Unix was built in Murray Hill and maintained by a succession of corporations and now sits locked in a safe at a company where they will never have the clue or interest to maintain or distribute it, thanks to IBM. Everything else is just sparkling multics.
(Source: was on the periphery, know the people who know where the bodies are)
And it’s neat to see how well IBM killed the competition who dared to cry code-rape.
Linux could be unix if someone wanted to pay to have it certified. It’s meaningless.
Linux is unix-like.
Hard to swallow pills: GNU is not Unix and Linux is just a kernel
I guess because no one is passionate about it. It’s just something people are using because it came with their computer.
Here people are almost only talking badly about it. It’s not a good product but I wonder if it’s as bad as people on Lemmy make it sound.
Still I don’t want to waste time away from Linux to discover it by myself.
Windows is worse than people on lemmy make it sound.
There are folks who are passionate about Windows, but those folks are also highly unlikely to use something like Lemmy.
While I agree that they aren’t likely to be on Lemmy, even outside of Lemmy, I’ve never met one of them.
I just know people who don’t know there is something else.
Still it’s good for me to have to use (a debloated version) Windows at work, as it allows me to still know how to deal with it.
Oh there are people who are very passionate about using Windows, in corporations almost exclusively. Had conversation with a system architect recently that made me go over every single reason why Windows isn’t my first choice and got more and more frustrated because if given the choice, I would always pick OpenStack over Azure.
What Windows has are dwindling enthusiast numbers.
I was a Windows fanboy for close to 30 years, until I switched to a Linux fanboy and never looked back.
They were amazing at backwards compatibility for decades, now they put up a TPM sized wall of planned obsolescence and instead we got a Linux flavour for anything.
Anyway, I don’t think I’ve ever heard anyone doing the reverse of your experience.
I guess I’m not techie enough to meet these people as I’m just talking to windows end users.
Windows is the safe (or was) default. If you walk into most companies, that’s what everyone has. If you buy a PC, that’s what’s installed. Using Linux or Mac is a conscious choice. That “us vs. them” feeling tends to foster community.
It’s more than that. Linux needs community for support.
Windows was never the safe option, it was the anticompetative option that took away the safe options!! Windows has always been quite genuinely the least secure, least stable, least maintainable option.
I think it’s “Safe” as in “No one was ever fired for choosing IBM” or more on the nose: If you choose to install Linux on all company computers and the CFO gets mad when Excel doesn’t work, why aren’t we just using windows??!?!? Then it’s your ass on the line. You will have a million enterprise software vendors that supports Windows, fewer that supports Linux.
It’s no longer the safe bet for a lot of companies/countries because of how USA is being run at the moment, but that’s s whole other reason.
“thats whats installed” I remember those times, but now Microsoft is forcing you to bloat your cheaper PC with win11, otherwise it will be out of date.Thats the problem now.
They exist, they’re just more corporate and centralized, and inundated with basic tech support questions due to the huge install base.
Like this: https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/category/windows
If you dig deep enough in there you’ll find administrators talking about powershell hacks and devops and group policy and stuff like that. There’s probably people who are “passionate” about Windows, I’d imagine, but since it’s closed source there’s only so much you can do without being literally an employee of MS. The people I’ve met like this are kind of smugly defensive about Windows because they’ve invested so much training and knowledge into its arcana, but it’s not exactly “passion”.
I used to know a kid who was a hardcore Windows stan. He wasn’t terribly bright. He had a business idea for a company called “Hackers For Hire” where he would come to your house and show you how to download commercial software for free.
I do sysadmin and hate all Microsoft software from Windows to their cloud offerings.
Customers don’t make good good communities.
!windows11@lemmy.world.
I found this communityI’m seeing some ‘how do I backup to move to linux’ and a lot of ‘this broke’ and ‘how do I fix this’!🤣
I mean, that’s kind of good for them. Not having a creative community that has content to post about means they are just using the OS. The OS is out of the way. I’m guessing the level of comments that Linux gets are more likely to happen on niche forums like powershell or autohotkey or whatever. I dunno, I love my Linux, but do wish it were a little more normal and boring sometimes.
In my experience, usually using Gnome as a DE, every Linux distro is just install, configure to my taste, and use without having to think about my OS ever again (unless I get bored and start changing stuff just because I can, or go in one of my distro-hop fevers). So, I genuinely don’t get what you’re saying, unless you’re being sarcastic, then suddenly it does make sense.
I’m saying Linux has a community that likes to talk about tweaking their systems, trying new things, discussing software, discussing distros, etc; Windows does not have users that do that for various reasons. It’s not shade on Linux at all, but to say that they don’t have a community talking about something as mundane as an OS is probably fine for them. I am glad we have the community and user engagement we have surrounding Linux.
LOL
Also some more from a quick search for “windows”, and my instance isn’t even that big to help with discoverability:

Oh
I think it’s not that active, right?
last post 3 days ago(as of feb,28,2026)
i find quite ironic that it’s full of troublshooting, while linux comms are primarily full of entertainment. “Windows just works out of the box” btw
I haven’t seen how Lemmy responds to troubleshooting requests about Linux. But I remember some Linux Reddit communities being full of vitriol of like “don’t use things you don’t understand” or like “distro? version? Hardware specs? Logs? Did you even search?” Which I believe led to people just starting out uncomfortable with asking for help there
All perfectly reasonable responses to bad questions that waste people’s time tbf.
Why are so many reddit subs so hostile? It isn’t just a problem with their Linux forums; it’s the entire site.
I think the answer is pretty complex and gets into why online communities in general become hostile, not just Reddit.
First off, there are incredible amounts of money and effort being spent to make people feel tribal and hate each other. Destabilization happens by convincing people that those next to them are at fault for their woes, and ensuring they don’t look up at the strings being pulled.
Second, those who generally aren’t hostile naturally don’t gravitate to places that are, so the gravity of hostility increases by hostile people being there and echoing hostility to those they perceive to be being hostile to them, even if the sentiment is “be less hostile.” It’s baked into meme culture. “Touch grass” is genuinely like “hey go outside, take a breath” at its core, but is now an insult or hostility that gets a reaction of further hostility.
Third, the world is really fucking shitty in ways outside of most people’s control. You can vote, martyr, donate, but generally the world has gotten to a close point to 100s of sci fi stories we’ve written warn us about, and so some people are just doing what the money in item one is spending, the conditioning works. Feels warm to hate someone. But then for those on the opposite they want to hate what they consider stupid.
That being said, people are genuinely shitty often, and it’s foolish to pretend that’s not the case. Open source has often been full of pettiness and bickering. Many a GitHub threads are just arguing about someone who wants a feature and is mad at volunteer developers for not delivering it. I could go on a tirade but I’ll end there
3/4 posts surrounding this one were asking for help with Linux.
Also the linux community on lemmy is big enough go have its own dedicated help/support communities.
That could be considered (relative) dead, given how many Windows users exist compared to Linux. In more serious note, I just think that Lemmy attracts more Linux users than Windows. That’s all to it.
By the same token, Mastodon has a lot more posts about Linux than Windows.
I recon its because nearly everyone who uses windows hates it, and with MacOS and Linux there are proud users.
Imagine being proud of using Apple 😂
I’m a former Mac cultist, but in my defense it was my first experience with computers.
It is a really good system for media production
For hobbyists maybe. Can’t do anything Windows can do, so both suck equally. Adobe CC runs on Linux.
Yeah great point. In Hollywood they use wine. Definitely not ubiquitously all-Mac shops everywhere, yeah definitely not that. Every media company definitely uses all Linux lmao
You’re high
Imagine being proud of using Microsoft!
At least Apple makes decent hardware (and questionable software practices). But at least macOS is true Unix. With WSL now I’m not really sure which experience is better.
I’d still take Linux any time.
Apple products are shit. There is no way around Linux for anyone with half a brain.
They have the best ARM CPUs in any consumer product and very good software/hardware security. I hate Apple because their shit is overpriced and locked-down but that doesnt mean its garbage.
Agreed. ipads and iphones being locked as a platform, i would never buy them. The PCs? You can install Linux and be happy with it (if you’re lucky enough).
Imagine buying a trash Mac for something like that lmao
I hate Apple because of it’s walled-garden practices, and even I’m tired of your rants about it. Yeah, I would never (again) buy an Apple product, but they know how to mix hardware, software and device integration like nobody else. If we want civil conversation and accurate info, we have to be objective. Additionally, Mac computers have a very specific use case, in my opinion, for everything else, any Linux distro blows Mac and Windows out of the water with not much effort.
I don’t understand why you are being so impolite.
I understand making fun of apple shills, it’s not a mature thing to do, but I get it. I just want to point out that being so “anti shill” is just as cringe.
Why do you care about what other people buy? We are having a technical discussion about different platforms, and your whole argument is “lmao buying apple”.
-
It’s corporate trash. Fuck Apple and their fanboys.
-
It’s poor people’s idea of pricey hardware.
-
It’s unusable crap with horrendous design.
-
My CPU positively destroys anything made by those idiots.
- It’s corporate trash but still does a couple things right
- Your CPU uses 5 times the energy and gets way hotter
- You can hate apple but also see the couple of things they do correctly.
- Yes Linux is better in every way except it’s a bit more to maintain, but I personally find it worth the effort.
I ran some benchmarks the other day and I was amazed by just how powerful and efficient the M4 Max in my Mac Studio is vs the 9800x3d in my desktop. Not only did the entire system use 2/3 the power of the 9800, while scoring well over 1.5x more. And then the system goes to idle and uses less than 10 watts. Less than just the 9800 at idle.
They’re incredible feats of engineering, only hampered by apples fuck ass software.
- That goes for qny company. Zero points.
-Yes, it’s better.
-
The only thing they’re good at is marketing and you’re falling for it. It’s technology for tech illiterate idiots.
-
Linux fucks every other OS.
-
I know several 😅 And me who are using an iPhone SE 2020 only for testing and learning the shitty system, can’t understand how the F people love iOS. I have also tried macOS. Hated it.
I had to start using it again for work. It’s improved. It has a Unix terminal now. Still annoying as fuck in a lot of ways, and the community sucks. A lot of stuff that you can get for free on Linux costs money, and even though some Linux software should work in theory, in practice it does not.
Why? They just wanna be computer experts, I think. Windows users look like they don’t even care.
'Cause Lemmy.
