Instant messaging and VoIP application
I am so so confused by all the messaging apps, what do people use discord for that other apps cant do
I played online for the first tike since AC Brotherhood the other week and realised a whatsapp callnisnt ideal but I dont know what improvements are needed
Discord has communities.
Want to build a voron 3d printer? -> discord.
Want to be part of the development of some Indy game? -> discord.
Want to engage with some community from a YouTube channel? -> discord.
Some GitHub project? -> discord.
The list goes on….
Revolt/Stoat is already an FOSS (free open source software), self-hostable, EU-developed, privacy focus alternative of Discord. It’s been there a couple of years and have multi-support (Win, Mac,Linux and dev Android/iOS)
So what are the purpose of Fluxer over Revolt/Stoat ?
If I remember right, this has been quietly in the works for years. It aims to be a 1-1 discord replacement.
Screen sharing/streaming, group video channels, voice channels are a priority, some of which completely do not work at all or very limited in stoat (the last I heard about it). I think that is the difference.
A different focus than matrix or stoat which seem more about being a slack alternative first and then voice/video were thrown in later with YMMV results.
They are also working on a new update which will lay groundwork so they can post more concrete self hosting info.
but how does the “subscription” stuff work if you self host? I’m not gonna use fluxer on their servers because they put dumb shit behind a paywall like discord does.
It’s open-source and GPL licensed. There are no restrictions if you self-host, the subscription only applies if you use an account on the main server, which pays for development and hosting costs of the main server.
Who knows… Like most discord alts it’s to early to know
character limit, upload limit, community limit, no username per server unless you pay for a subscription? hard pass.
This won’t become federated simply because of the fact you have to pay to unlock these features. If I made a fluxer server then I wouldn’t charge my users for having a stupid animated gif avatar. I know discord is shit but this thing ain’t the alternative.
All those features are only paid if you use their servers. They’re still reworking their self hosting version (they had one but they’re simplifying it) and if you self host all that is free.
Isn’t that just for the version they host? Most of the docs say all features are or will be available in the source code. Although if federated and interacting with their hosted communities would you be restricted?
So far I’m lovin matrix, bit it’s not really discord alternative, I mean there is no screen sharing or Voice Call ig?
But because I’m into computers and Linux there are somany spaces filled with fellow penguins, I’m not sure if someone else can find rooms for their own hobbies though…
I think with how Matrix is structured clients can support features that are not part of the core, including video calls. That said, it does mean you need to use one of the clients that support it (I think the most popular ones do), I think it’s built on jitsi, and doesn’t support screensharing (at least not with audio).
animated gif avatar? hard pass. avatars need to be under 32kb they transmit and load so often.
I am using it more or less actively. The big thing I am waiting for is the self host and federation support. But in general it is a good replacement for discord with its own people and community’s. Met really cool people there.
Ooh, dope! I’m gonna try this out in a bit.
Sigh, you need to register before you are allowed to click around. I guess ill wait a bit more then. How are you finding it?
If you’d rather avoid registering, you could try Movim instead, which just needs a username and password to use, no email required during sign-up.
So far, it’s pretty much exactly what’s on the label. Seems like a decent discord clone, things work pretty much exactly how you’d expect them to.
I’ll be able to try out fluxer more this evening as I beg my friends to swap. 😅
My only complaint, and it’s a real me complaint, is the flathub installation didn’t work like at all and I couldn’t figure out why, but most of the time flathub won’t work for me. It just means I have to go to the developer’s site and grab the file there.
why not use in browser?
I don’t like having a browser open all the time. And like I said, it installed fine when I just grabbed the .deb file from their site, I just can’t use flathub.
Sounds like it can be great in the future then, hope you can get your friends to cross over.
The install seemed to work for me through the cosmic store, so hopefully they figure out why it didn’t work for you :)
On Linux the one thing that is borked right now is sharing the PC audio when screensharing. Everything else is crazy good. Best Discord clone by far.
What is flathub?
A place where you get software for Linux, in the form of flatpaks.
its a place where you can get prepackaged malware that runs on your linux install half as well as if it was running natively.
“Is this Standards? This has to be Standards.”
clicks
“Yeah, of course it’s Standards.”
Seem interesting.
Fucking finally
Can talk cryptocurrency on there?
No. Use Nostr for that, since it’s already overrun by crypto-bros over there.
Hey! Thanks man got a link to that?
