    It’s traditional. Medieval christians defined fish as “not meat” so they could eat it during fasting (along with finding other creative workarounds, like wrapping meat in dough so the all-seeing, all-knowing entity couldn’t see them eating meat (see Herrgottsbescheißerle)

      Some of them also came up with creative definitions for “fish”, so they could eat a nice roast some humble fish on a Friday or during lent. (A beaver definitely is a fish, just look at it swim around in water all day, also it has a scaly tail, need any more evidence? Now shut up and eat your roast fish.)
