    I saw a sign that said no vacancy in english and chinese, but then in japanese below it it said, if you can read this, come on in.

      That’s a bar that didn’t want to deal with language barriers, because it has caused issues for them in the past. I don’t see how that’s relevant

        In both cases its using language to reject some people and accept others. I’m sure the professor had reasons the preferred not to interact with Chinese speakers, just like the bar/restaurant.
