2026 is gonna be the year I finally move to Linux. I have huge concerns about many aspects of switching, but they’re being overtaken by concerns about staying with Windows. I don’t even mind if my overall user experience is a bit worse on Linux (I am trying to have reasonable expectations that it won’t be the walk in the park Linux advocates on Lemmy like to claim), I just have much more faith in its security, privacy, customisability and - most importantly - the motivations and intentions of its developers.

I don’t understand why, when a specific product or company is accused by scientists and others of being harmful, we give any airtime whatsoever to said product or company. Did we not learn from the tobacco industry and oil industry and pharmaceutical industry that this is either a colossal waste of everyone’s time, or allows them to muddy the waters sufficiently to continue doing more harm in the interim? Why do I need to hear from sociopathic techbros that their products are fine actually?

On a related note, it’s hilarious to me that the Ecosia search engine has AI built in. Like, I don’t think planting any number of trees is going to offset the damage AI has done and will do to the planet.

I was gonna give it a chance back when they were letting people reserve their usernames. When the site first went live (in beta, I guess?) they wanted me to pay them money to gain access. Enshittification is baked into the platform.
