With Russia funding its war effort through financial gains from the close of the Strait of Hormuz, and amping up attacks while Trump’s eye is turned towards the Middle East, experts tell Maira Butt that this is a very delicate moment for Ukraine
Enemy at the gates is not a documentary, and that scene is very much not historically accurate. The actual history is significantly more complicated.
I don’t think the comparison to the soviets is needed at all. I think the incompetence of the Russian army stands by itself. And unless this new offensive somehow turns things around, I think that Russia’s forces will continue to get fucked for the foreseeable future.
The scene might be fictional, but Russia did use human wave assaults in World War II. These were effective in the latter part of the war. Whether it will result in the gains Putin wants in Ukraine remains to be seen.
Sure, but there’s a few differences between now and WW2.
Russia doesn’t have a lend-lease partner so lost material is very hard to replace, whereas Ukraine has multiple defense markets to purchase material from.
Russias only advantage is their manpower. The issue is they have had degraded capacity to adequately replenish their war materials. Eventually this will hit a critical mass that will swing the war in Ukraines favor.
But Ukraine could run out of troops and Europe and the US might not continue to supply military equipment. Trump is already switching equipment from Ukraine to the Mideast.
Ukraine could run out of troops. But Russia could suffer another military coup. They almost did with Wagner. Russia is also running very low on S400 launchers. Ukraine could break down Russia’s AAA over the battlefield, and when that does happen, they can systematically route that area of operations.
Then Putin will be motivated to accept my proposal. My proposal gives Putin a way to save face. He can claim that he achieved his goal of getting the US out of Europe.
Yes, but Putin is willing to sacrifice his troops just as Stalin in World War II because Russia has far greater manpower. See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8fWp-i-BGA&t=26s

Why in your world does Putin deserve to save face? Why should he keep any land he took?
The war has to end in order to save lives on both sides. Peace will require Putin saving face and keeping some land.
No the war can end when Ukraine pushes Russia out of all their stolen land including Crimea.
It is 1 to 4 population difference so not the biggest difference.
Putin might be willing to sacrifice his people, but Zelensky cares more.
