Jo Miran@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•SpaceX Begging Feds To Ground Apple-Funded Rival's SatellitesEnglish1·4 months agoEverything SpaceX is doing and has done could have been done by NASA had NASA been given the equivalent funds and leeway. This has been covered multiple times in many interviews of NASA scientists and engineers. Simply put, NASA cannot afford and is not allowed to take risks. They are not allowed to blow up ships over Florida and the Caribbean until they figure it out. They used to be allowed, but not anymore.

This is literally my firm’s core business practice. We’ve been at it for so long that at this point we have to be included in competing bids because we are the only ones in the world that can do certain specific things.
Jo Miran@lemmy.mlto Technology@lemmy.world•SpaceX Begging Feds To Ground Apple-Funded Rival's SatellitesEnglish523·4 months agoIf you really hate Elon Musk, I have two words for you. “Thanks Obama”
Every single aspect of Elon’s “success” has been heavily subsidized or paid for by the US government (aka, tax payers).
EDIT: It seems the “Thanks Obama” meme has fallen into obscurity. It is an older joke in which everything was blamed on Obama, no matter how far fetched. I even used italics.
The point of my comment is that Elon is the biggest “welfare” beneficiary in history. All of his businesses would be a financial failure without billions of dollars in grants, benefits and contracts from the government, and that he’s been sucking on that government teet since Obama was in office. In fact, it was Obama who saved Tesla, hence the 'Thanks Obama" joke. Even Obama is aware and why the crashing Teslas scene is in the Netflix movie he produced. Now Elon is looking for federal assistance to block his competition.
We need a truly FOSS browser that developed and maintained by the community. Librewolf isn’t it unless it fully forks away from Mozilla. We need a new engine and we just don’t have one yet.

All software I had was copied because I could not afford jack shit on my own. It is thanks to pirated (and open source) software that I have the career I have, and can afford to spend thousands of dollars on legitimate software, music, movies, books, etc.
Provide product people want and prices they can afford, and they’ll buy them rather than pirate them. Don’t persecute consumers of pirated products and most of them will eventually purchase legally.

A Chinese startup with a ‘joke of a budget‘ may have already undercut those hopesEnglish352·5 months agoThe US is getting owned by China left and right, but sure lets focus on abusing minorities, women, LGBTQ+, and the poor instead of investing on actually making America great. Whatever.

So…I have doubts.
